Are you avoiding the use of web video?

December 30, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · Leave a Comment

If you are avoiding the use of web video to tell your story, promote your business, or communicate with your target market…you may want to reconsider.  Comscore has put out a report (thanks Tech Crunch) that states the following:

Video search on YouTube accounts for a quarter of all Google search queries in the U.S., according to the latest search engine numbers from comScore.

‘Nuf said?  Do you see how being findable on many fronts is key to an effective web strategy?  Video is power.  Either do it yourself or engage professionals like us for heavy lifting…but DO IT.  Tell/show/live your story.

Ryan Wade lays out building a scalable membership business (and uses personal trainers as the example)

December 29, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · 3 Comments

I really like that Ryan Wade is telling his audience in plain English…how to scale a web based membership solution. So many people begin “businesses” that are really “stressful time for money swaps”. Ryan simply says that you need scale to grow and truly have a profitable business that will leverage your time vs. make you a slave to it. Sound good? Don’t take my word for it. Invest a few moments.  Watch and grasp how leveraging web video and a great site to deliver content you create ONCE to MANY can work for you.

Now, you personal trainers out there…maybe a few personal trainers in Des Moines, Iowa especially.

Listen to Ryan’s example and do the math yourself. I love this stuff. It’s what keeps me pumped up to build our base of successful membership site clients. By the way, we have a few more of those going LIVE soon so stay tuned and sign up for RSS or email updates (top right or bottom of this post). Be well and prosper.

createWOWmedia Links that Matter to Small and Medium Sized Businesses (SMB’s) 12/29/2008

December 28, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · Leave a Comment

  • This video is worth watching because it clearly reinforces, with some believable math, how creating a scalable information based business is far more lucrative than “trading your time for money”. Sure, we all probably have to engage in some of time/money swaps right? Speaking engagements that build your brand perhaps for a fee? Certain consulting engagements that build brand, credibility, and of course…some operating cash. But don’t lose site of the big picture and that’s creating a business where what you create once…will be used by the masses many times over. That’s scale.

Doug Mitchell has a new job title at create WOW media: Marketing Technopologist

December 19, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · 1 Comment

There’s a great piece on the Wall Street Journal (wsj.com) called “The Secrets of Marketing in a Web 2.0 World”.  While much of the article shares some pretty common themes over the last few years (in our circles at least), I was floored by the next to the last paragraph.  The article recommends that businesses find and hire a:

marketing technopologist

I’ll let a quote from the piece explain:

So who should direct a company’s forays into Web 2.0 marketing? A number of managers identified an ideal set of skills for an executive that go beyond those of a typical M.B.A. holder or tech expert. We coined the term marketing technopologist for a person who brings together strengths in marketing, technology and social interaction. A manager said, “I’d want to see someone with the usual M.B.A. consultant’s background, strong interest in psychology and sociology, and good social-networking skills throughout the organization.”

I’m pretty sure this is what I do every day.

Hi I’m Doug and I’m a Marketing Technopologist.

Do your presentations create WOW! or ho hum?

December 18, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · Leave a Comment

Abhay Parekh has a nice short list of presentation attention getters on the Manage Smarter website. I must say we’ve come a long way in this area at create WOW media but we’re always looking to get better.

We’re most enthused by number one on the list and that’s:

Show, rather than tell.

By leveraging graphics/imagery to assist your tale you allow the audience to follow YOU and YOUR MESSAGE vs. try and read something on a slide.  Still, today, I cannot understand how people can simply get up and read me what’s on their slides.  That’s when I hope for a technology failure and could get some “from the heart” talk.

Another favorite was number 5:

Know when to stop

In my blogging for business class, I prepared about double the amount of slides/information I actually got through because of the unbelievably valuable QA sprinkled throughout the class.  That was most valuable to the class according to surveys.  Lesson learned.  Cut back on slides…more real world examples.

Doing less with more in 2009

December 17, 2008 by Doug Mitchell · 5 Comments

We talk quite a bit about doing more with less.  Our clients and potential clients are seeking higher return on investment, measurability, and increased Internet Findability. Online marketing/blogging/video provides all of these in one nicely wrapped package.

B2B Magazine just had a feature outlining some goals/strategies/deliverables they believe will be key for companies in 2009. It’s a great read.  We especially like 2nd and 7th topics on the list.

Leveraging social marketing

However you define social marketing, this piece is critical.  Start with a blogging foundation and build your social marketing strategy around that.  Maybe for you Twitter and Facebook are where you need to be.  Focus your efforts and get to providing value to the market.  Join the conversation.

Video explosion

We couldn’t agree more.  As Google begins to integrate video results into “normal search results” you want to be there!  When someone searches on “Plumber Des Moines” and there’s a nicely produced video showing what it’s really like to do business with you, your odds just went up.

Let the other guys spend their money being a bigger part of that monstrosity that killed a bunch of trees and gathers dust we used to call a phone book.

  • This a great piece discussing the value of social networking in business. Here’s the money quote:

“Knowledge is the life-blood of all businesses, and is arguably one of the few business assets that will not depreciate in value during a recession. Social networks can maximise the value of this asset by making it possible for employees to connect to and share knowledge. To harness the most value from this knowledge, the information needs to be relevant and employees must be able to access it.”

Yes…maximize the VALUE of information across the company. Nice.
